Conjugation of "ir" verbs

Changing “ir” ending verbs:

1. Drop the “ir” ending from the verb.
2. Add the appropriate ending to match the pronoun.
Yo – o
tú- es Nosotros/as- imos
él/ella/usted – e Ellos/ellas/uds. - en

The difference between "er" and "ir" ending verbs are the nosotros/as forms. The "ir" verb has the "imos" ending, and the "er" verb has the "emos" ending.

Example:
Abrir – to open
1. drop the ending = abr
2. add the appropriate ending to match the pronoun/person (yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, nosotras, ellos, ellas, ustedes)
yo abro nosotros/as – abrimos
tú abres
él abre ellos abren
ella abre ellas abren
usted abre ustedes abren

We have just completed our first section of this semester. Progress reports will be distributed this week. We just took our first common assessment last week on the regular "ar" verbs; their meanings and conjugations.

Likes & Dislikes

To find out what a friend likes, or likes to do, we ask this question:
¿Qué te gusta? – What do you like?

Response:

"ar" verb conjugations

Conjugating “ar” verbs:
What is conjugation? = You change the verb form to match the person that is doing the action.

example:
1. verb- estudiar (to study)
• this is the infinitive or unchanged verb.

2. I need to change this verb to match the person.
example= Yo estudio. (the ending “ar” was dropped and “o” was added)

A. Each person has a different ending when you conjugate:
* drop the ending “ar” and add these endings:
Yo (I) – o - estudio
Tú (you) – as - estudias
él (he) – a - él estudia
ella (she)– a - ella estudia
usted (you)– a - usted estudia

plural:
Nosotros (masc.) - estudiamos
Nosotras (fem.)=(we/us) – amos

ellos (m) - ellos estudian
ellas (f)(they/them) - an -ellas estudian
ustedes (you all) - ustedes estudian

Upcoming assignments

1. On Friday, September 3rd, we will have a speaking quiz on the Spanish alphabet. The students are responsible to know how to say every letter of the alphabet. They will be asked ten random letters. Each letter said correctly is worth 2 points, for a total of 20 points.

2. We will be beginning the conjugation of regular "ar" verbs this week. Along with this we will learn the pronouns.

Family Project

Family Project:
In this project you will describe your real or imaginary family.
You will need to include a representation of 3 generations:
example
1st generation – los abuelos
2nd generation – los padres, los tíos
3rd generation – tú, los hermanos, los primos

You will need to include at least ten people in this process.
You will need to use actual pictures or cutouts from magazines to represent the various members of the family.

• You will then choose three of these family members, one from each generation, and write a paragraph description of each one using the following information:

Content:
1. The person’s relationship to you. (mi padre, mi hermana, mi tío, mi primo etc…)
2. Their age and birthday.
3. Physical description. Use at least 2 positive adjectives, with a total of 3 descriptions of their physical appearance.
4. Describe their personality using at least 2 positive adjectives, with a total of 3 adjectives describing their personality.
5. Where they live. ( Mi abuela vive en Minnesota.)
6. Describe four activities that they like or dislike.

Extra credit: 5 points extra for additional family members described as above. (maximum 25 points)

Homework for Tuesday May 25th, 2010:
Write down the people and how they are related to you.
(To be completed in Spanish)

Written Rough Draft for peer editing: Due June 2nd (Wednesday)
Final Draft is due on Friday June 4th.

The Family


We are entering our last chapter for the year.... WOW! Can you believe it? I can't.

We will be learning vocabulary dealing with family and describing people. We are going to be talking about people in class, around the school, and all over the world.
We will be doing a project about your "real" or "imaginary" family.

This is going to be another enjoyable part of the year.

Qué tiempo hace?


We've been learning about weather and seasons while reviewing months. We just took a quiz over the last two days that dealt with the weather and sesaons.
Most of the material in this chapter has been review, which has been good.
We are in the middle of State Testing (FUN....not)!

How often do you check the blog?

How often? – Expressing how often you do certain activities.

¿Con qué frecuencia ……? = How often do you….?
ej. ¿Con qué frecuencia lavas tus manos?
How often ….. (verb) do you wash…. your hands.

Useful vocabulary words:
Nunca = never
todos los días = every day
siempre = always
a veces = sometimes
durante.. = during ej. durante la clase de inglés (during English class)
después de = after
los fines de la semana = the weekends
antes = before
solo cuando = Only when… (solo cuando tengo tiempo libre)
nada = nothing
nadie = nobody
Cada – each/every ej. cada lunes (every Monday)
casi - almost
sin - except

Some examples:
1. Question asking you:
¿Con qué frecuencia juegas los deportes?

Yo juego los deportes los lunes, martes y jueves.

1. E to IE changes
Cerrar - to close example: Yo cierro, Tú cierras, él cierra, Nos. cerramos, Ellos cierran
Comenzar - to begin
Confesar - to confess
Empezar - to begin
Gobernar - to govern
Pensar - to think
Defender - to defend
entender - to understand
Perder - to lose
Querer - to want
Preferir- to prefer
referir - to tell, to refer
sentir - to feel, to regret
* The higlighted RED letter is the stem change letter
2. E to I verbs
Servir - to serve example: yo sirvo, tú sirves, él sirve, nos. servimos, ustedes sirven

LET'S PLAY Jeopardy!

We finished playing Jeopardy in class today via the powerpoint presentation. All students did a great job of participating.
Each student will be paired up with another as they create their own game.
The final product will be due next Friday, the 19th of March.
We will be working on this project in class for a few days and it is due on Friday, the 19th of March.
Here are the rules:
  1. . 6 categories (examples: colors, school subjects, ar verbs, ir verbs etc..)
  2. Each category needs to have 5 questions and 5 responses. That would be a total of 30 questions/responses for your game.
  3. It can be any game that includes a minimum of 4 players. ( if you want the template for the Jeopardy powerpoint, I need your flash drive by Friday the 12th of March.
  4. Appropriate material please. NO foul language, content, or pictures. Same school rules apply to the game.

Interview Questions

You will be interviewing your "new" partner on Monday the 1st of Feb. After being assigned your "new" seat, you will ask questions

Here are the guidelines as discussed in class:

Stem changing Verbs O to UE

On the Verb List for stem changing verbs, o to ue, here are the changes.

Almorzar
- the o changes to ue in the conjugations except for the nosotros form.
yo almuerzo nosotros almorzamos
tú almuerzas ellos almuerzan
él almuerza ellas almuerzan
ella almuerza ustedes almuerzan
usted almuerza

There is an exception to the rule for Jugar.
Jugar is a u to ue changing verb. This simply means that an e is added to the u when we conjugate.

Yo juego nosotros jugamos
tú juegas ellos juegan
él juega ellas juegan
ella juega ustedes juegan
usted juega

Follow the conjugation rules for ar, er, and ir verbs.

Happy New Year! 2nd Semester begins

Welcome back to the new semester. This semester we're going to start off with reviewing time and talking about our classes. We will be discussing class schedules. We will also discuss when things end and begin using times.

We will have quiz this Friday on start and end times for certain classes.

I'm looking forward to a great 2nd semester.
